1 - CONGRATULATIONS! I am so excited for you (and also me, to get to read the book, and for more people to get a chance to learn about your generous, funny, insightful writing)
2 - I can totally make that shirt design for you to have made at some kind of shirt establishment if you want.
3 - METAL FIRECRACKER!!! I just spent a perfect evening last week driving around Vancouver with a carful of friends scream-singing our way through the entirety of Car Wheels On A Gravel Road, easily one of the best albums in Music. Were you disappointed Lucinda Williams had already rudely claimed "Don't Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You" for her own memoir title?
2. I got another "I could make the shirt" offer too but I very well may be reaching out.
3. Re: Lucinda stealing the absolute perfect memoir title just because she happened to write that line... YES! And to think that I used to think that she was strong/I used to think she was proud/I used to think... nothing... could go wrong.
Hi, Garrett, huge congrats to you!! I only very recently discovered your work (through AHP's recommendations page), but I'm so looking forward to pre-ordering and reading your book. Thanks for all you do!
I’m SO EXCITED for this book!! I broke my New Year’s resolution to pre-order it. Happily. Congratulations!! And I love the cover and can’t wait for you to tell us the answer to the typeface question bc it looks familiar but I can’t come up with the answer.
OMG The Bear. I binged the first season last week while traveling and now am trying to slowly watch season 2 to make it last. You must get that shirt made.
So thankful for you and the wisdom and compassion you bring to the world through your work - and now this book. YAY!!
There is no greater honor than getting to be the reason why somebody broke their New Years resolution!
Also: As soon as you finish Season Two, if you need anybody to talk The Bear with at length let me know. The password is gofastboatsmojito, all one word.
YAAAAAAAS! this is SUCH good news! excellent cover *insert heart eyes emoji if i knew how to do that in comments here* i am so happy for you and cannot wait to read it! and also TV ON THE RADIOOOOO!!!!!! their song Shout Me Out was one of my go-tos to get through the pandemic response, and I just got Dear Science on vinyl and it's delicious.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! I’m so excited for you!!! I know the feeling of having your first book published (mine was co-written - which actually helped me to be able to market it better than if it was just me lol), the excitement when you see the cover design makes it more real! Just wait until you see it at a bookstore!!
The Bear. OMG. I finished it last week and was so devastated by that last episode. I hate waiting a year for resolution! It kills me! I can’t stop saying “Behind” when I walk behind someone now lol. It has actually come in so handy with my kids. I also can’t stop listening to “Strange Currencies” and “Half a World Away” by R.E.M. Your shirt design sounds great and hilarious!! You will have to post a pic when it happens!
We have started the “heard” in our house. I love the idea that you can acknowledge someone’s grievances, regardless of your own capacity to process them, at that moment. And at the same time promise to come back to them!
My sister and her husband cannot watch it yet because they've spent their entire lives in the restaurant industry and it's a bit too traumatizing. I only spent a few years working in family restaurants and even I found it triggering! But so, SO good. I love that show.
I can see that. Even with my years in kitchens far, far in the rearview, I originally gave up after episode 3 of season 1 bc I was worried it would just be the "weekly stressful restaurant trauma review" but I'm so glad I went back to it.
I actually think it's important. I was just on a weeklong wilderness trail crew, and one of the people on it has worked in the high-end restaurant industry as a sommelier most of her life. She had some STORIES. Let me tell you, insane stories. She and this guy from Italy/Chile/Vietnam spent our entire morning off in Kitchen Nightmares conversations and I of course brought up The Bear and the combined response was "OMG that show is so true." At a deep, "this is a really unhealthy environment for people to be working in" level/.
When it first came out my sister shared an article with me by someone writing about The Bear in the context of talking about how restaurants prey on nurturing people with trauma in their backgrounds, because they just want to care for people by feeding them.
Actually my sister and her husband are friends with someone who’s friends with someone who helped create the show, and there’s a solid conviction in that slice of restaurant world that the whole show was written to save someone’s life. It goes that deep. But it’s also a damn good show.
Wow. I can see that. I had to stop a few episodes in to let my fingernails grow back before moving on. It was triggering without having worked many restaurant jobs.
Literally because of this thread I’m starting to rewatch it tonight and I think there’s something in that. For anyone with a bit of interpersonal trauma, it’s going to be triggering. A lot of us might not even know why, but it’s there.
Exactly! So many triggering family dynamics issues... the alcoholism was a big one.
I have been meaning to rewatch the last episode of season 2 again since I finished it because I hadn’t realized it was the final one of the season when I watched it. It was a lot. I may go rewatch the whole thing though.
I swear I have that book -- whatever the one is that font refers to -- on my shelves but am pulling a blank! But the T-shirt will totally work. It's perfect.
I will definitely pre-order the book, if only because (a) I also just got into The Bear (just finished season one on Sunday and OMG it's the best), (b) I had no idea Edward Norton was related to James Rouse???, (c) I hope you managed to slip a reference to Eurovision or Melodifestivalen into the book.
Congratulations! I love real books and I am definitely curious about yours. I feel like there is probably at least a chapter in there that we can share with our multicultural book club. I love reading your work here and I can’t wait to read your book because I really prefer things I can hold.
This is a long way to say congratulations. I am writing a memoir and my son asked me the same question about being famous. I love your explanation of this book is about but it’s also about.
Thank you!! Also, so glad that I'm not the only memoirist to get that very appropriate but good-for-putting-you-in-your-place question from a young loved one lol

1. You are the absolute champ, Lee.
Congrats, Garrett!! Extremely exciting.
Wooo hoo!!! Thank you!

Oh wow, thanks for being here, Emma! Hope you continue to feel welcomed in this space, and goodness, thanks so much for pre-ordering!
Congrats! So excited for the book. Ordered it from my local store’s bookshop account, so I get to support you and a local business.
I know the font and design looks familiar, but I can’t place it for the life of me.
Thank you so, so much Shervyn! Happy to reveal the font answer if you want to send me an email

So excited, can't wait to read. Congratulations!
Also, I want to know the answer to the book cover homage. It's so familiar...
First off, thank you!
Also, for all those of you keeping score at home, Satya did email me a guess as to her book cover homage guess AND SHE WAS RIGHT!
😂🎉
Pre-ordered, check! Suggested to my library, check!
Garrett, this is wonderful news, and you got a banging cover. So looking forward to reading.
You're the absolute best, Anna. Thank you!
So exciting, Garrett! Just pre-ordered and put in a purchase request with my library system. Congratulations!! ~Tracy
I appreciate it so, so much Tracy. Thank you!

Well, you can thank Columbia, MD for 1/4 of what you love about TV On the Radio, lol!
Reed your recommendations never miss and I will DEFINITELY be getting Dear Science on vinyl. Also Garrett CONGRATULATIONS!
hahaha YES! so glad to have influenced you on this.

I love hearing other authors tell me all the great emotions involved with their debuts-- 100% helps regulate the wild pendulum swings of emotions.
As for all your notes on The Bear, I have one thing to say in response: YES, CHEF!
We have started the “heard” in our house. I love the idea that you can acknowledge someone’s grievances, regardless of your own capacity to process them, at that moment. And at the same time promise to come back to them!
100%. I love the sign language "I'm sorry" gesture that Carm and Sydney do for similar reasons.
Yes!
Yes I like that one too and have used it a couple of times! Will definitely keep it handy for my kids.

that makes so much sense.

Just pre-ordered and am very, very excited for when this book comes out, Garrett. Congratulations!
I loved The Bear and your book title would make such a great T-shirt in that style!
Very, very kind of you Nia (both your words about the books and affirming my fits of t-shirt fancy)
I swear I have that book -- whatever the one is that font refers to -- on my shelves but am pulling a blank! But the T-shirt will totally work. It's perfect.
Send me an email if you want the font homage reveal
congratulations! just pre-ordered 🎉
Yeahhhhh!!! Thank you Hannah!

So glad that you too are a Bear partisan!
And yes, there are definitely some Swedish Easter Eggs in there.
