Garrett. You are younger than I. I am a late boomer, was a tween during most of Vietnam, saw Nixon resign leave the White House and thought that Watergate was an end to corruption, felt chills as I heard that Obama won, felt horror when the other guy did in 2016. I have hoped for hope since I was 13 and could read TIME magazine from cover to cover. When I was young, I thought it was religion that could save us, the words of Jesus. I still try to follow his way but not the church. As I got older, I thought it was politics, the titans of the Senate, the experience of the state department. Now, I just know that killing people who stand in your way, who don't want you to live your life that they don't respect or value, is monstrous. To dehumanize people, whether you call them addicts or Nazis or Trumpists or Jews, does not help us live with each other, to create a world in which children can be happy and safe. I believe in the power of grass roots organizing, just have a hard time helping in a deep red state like Idaho. Keep telling us how, helping us to find a place where we can help.
All of this is so powerful, and such a gift to read, Laura (especially for the ways it made me feel a connection between our stories, even if they span different decades).
"I have hoped for hope since I was 13" in particular, though, will stay with me.
