So hard, Garrett. I'm sorry. This sounds like a very difficult situation. What you said about community--"Community isn’t a single right answer. It’s a complicated holding of so many things in our hands that the pile is always teetering, always threatening to tumble out."--is perfect and gives the starting point for why it's all so hard.
Morning Garrett. So tough! Thanks for reminder that there's no single or right answer except to find together what works in your community. I have a friend who still suffers nerve damage from a speeding car that crashed into her car. It was a police car on a high speed chase. I just don't believe that those high speed chases (in so many movies) works for any community. To me, these chases belong to a tradition of hunting and killing ("vermin"). For kids, I imagine the attraction may be the romance and adrenaline of the race and there may even be envy for police who can "legally" race in the streets. I look forward to hearing about the creative options you all come up with. Will be a good prompt for my own imagination.
I really appreciate the multiple truths you held here, Stephanie. Folks driving too fast IS dangerous AND our society's current solution for it (high-speed chases) doesn't actually make any of us safer.
So glad you can share here the good the bad and perhaps the unprocessed and processed. I’m becoming more connected to a non profit called Sidewalktalk.org. Listening to HEAR. Sit on the sidewalk and hear... not share. Hold space for that pain.I’m Sharing in case it may be something to explore . We pull up a chair and have a sign “free listening”. Not easy work. But important work I think. In community, neighborhoods it can build trust. Not judge a reply. Not have a reply for a while. Reminds me of 12 step tables. Sit and share and hear ourselves taking because in the end the answers are always within not without 💜☮️💜
I hadn't heard of them before but will check them out now-- that's absolutely the model though! And I'm glad you likened the process to 12 step tables... as it turns out, there's a pretty clear commonality in what human beings need (being listened to, valued) to be able to walk into transformation of all kinds.
Garrett - I’m just seeing this now and I am so so heartsick. Both for the loss of life and for your pain & anxiety. Thank you for sharing your struggles and for your compassion & honesty. trying to do your best. It is an example that we all need right now. Sending you lots of ❤️

I am going to sit with this piece for a long time. Thank you.
Thanks Jennifer!
