appreciate the "Now Going Door-To-Door Trying To Shock People" throwback!
and i had just been talking with my roommate about the ben shapiro song and specifically, imagining a frightening counterfactual world in which it had been a good song. i know there are a lot of morally abhorrent musicians who make songs that slap (again, speaking as someone who grew up emotionally attached to the smiths), but imagine how hard it would have been for us all if the ben shapiro song had been awesome?
Because you brought up one Mr. Steven Morrissey, I am now specifically imagining a world in which The Smiths never existed but I listen to the new Ben Shapiro song for the first time and I discover that he wrote "Ask" or Cemetry Gates." I would feel upset! And torn! And then I'd realize that facts don't care about my feelings, which would only make matters worse!
It's just an accident of timing, but it's kind of a coincidence that this was published shortly after I saw that Toby Keith ("I'll put a boot up your ass, it's the American way") died.
I was just also reading something about Shane Gillis, the comedian known for his anti-Asian "jokes," who will be hosting SNL later this month. I'm old enough to remember when Andrew Dice Clay hosted in 1990. There's always been a demand for this type of entertainer, I suppose.
That's exactly what I thought (re: Toby Keith) when I saw the news... literally right after I pressed publish. I definitely trace "Courtesy of the Red White and Blue" as the birth of the particular genre of deliberately big, dumb and mean "political" country songs that come around at a pretty regular clip.
They have a couple of Asian cast members these days - wonder if they will boycott, as Nora Dunn famously did when Dice hosted. (Lorne Michaels was furious with her for not consulting him first - even worse since they were dating at the time.)
The irony of his “deepening…political analysis” song “Dirty Money” being about “politicians and corporations and media conglomerates just want your dollars” when that is clearly all he cares about (oh, and fame). While he continues to make music celebrated by people and about topics he seems personally unaligned with (?) That he doesn’t see himself and what he does in the same light as the entities he admonishes on the song is pretty on-brand for his ilk, lol. I’m definitely tired of being on the receiving end of his fan base’s enhanced bravado (because he makes the soundtrack to their grievances!) while he simultaneously does the plausible deniability shuffle. Thank goodness I was taught how to navigate this from young.

Yep, yep, yep to all this!
